A List Of Non-Acidic Fruits

Fruits have a pH level of under 7 but foods are classified as acidic if its pH level is under 4.6 and non-acidic if the pH level is above 4.6.

How will you know if what you’re eating are non-acidic fruits? To determine alkalinity or acidity of certain samples, it goes through a pH scale which stands for “potential of Hydrogen”. It basically says whether if a compound is acidic, neutral, or alkaline.

  • Acidic: 0 pH level 
  • Neutral: 7 pH levels is neutral
  • Alkaline: 14 pH levels is alkaline

For example, purified or distilled water has a pH level of 7 which is neutral and a liquid drain cleaner is extremely alkaline with a pH level of 14. While the acids in a battery cell score a pH level of 0 which makes it very acidic.

Certain parts of the human body also have different pH levels. For example, the stomach should at least have a pH level of 3.5 for proper digestion. The blood must have a pH level that ranges from 7.35-7.45.

In general, all fruits have some amounts of acids in them and have a pH level of under 7. The acids found in fruits are produced naturally through a process called microbial fermentation. However, certain foods are only classified as high acid if its pH level is lower than 4.6 and considered non-acidic fruits if its pH level is above 4.6. Fruits with a pH level of 4.6 and above will be further discussed later in this article.

Acidic Fruits

Generally, citric foods have a lower pH level, thus, it makes them more acidic comparing to other fruits groups. They may contribute or cause problems in the gastrointestinal area that include reflux and even ulcer.

According to Clemson University, the fruits listed below have one of the highest acidity among other fruits groups:

  • Lime fruits – pH level of 2 to 2.80
  • Blue Plums – pH level of 2.80 to 3.40
  • Grapes – pH level of 2.90 to 3.82
  • Pomegranates – pH level of 2.93 to 3.20
  • Grapefruits – pH level of 3 to 3.75

Fruits rich in citric acid are generally healthy and possess no serious health risk. However, it may contribute to aggravating symptoms linked to digestive health problems such as reflux or ulcer.

Non-Acidic Fruits: What Are They?

Normally, unripe fruits have a higher pH level and acidity decreases as it ripens. The fruit’s chemical composition can also be affected by fermentation and certain manufacturing process like for example converting fruits into oils or essential oils. Thus, it increases its acidity levels.

1. Papaya

First in our list of non-acidic fruits is papaya. A fruit found in most tropical and subtropical regions of the planet like South America, Oceanic Countries, and the Philippines. Papaya fruit has an average pH level of 5.2 to 5.7 and contains glucose and carbohydrates, with small amounts of starch. Its primary benefit is it helps in digestion—thanks to its rich enzyme called papain. In fact, papayas are often used as meat tenderizers because of this property. It’s also rich in water and fiber compounds that promote a healthy digestive system and helps prevent constipation.

2. Bananas

Bananas are native in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and certain parts of the Oceanic areas like Australia and Papua New Guinea. An unripe banana contains a pH level of about 5.6. However, if you want lesser acids then you should go for ripe bananas which have a pH level of 6.5. A serving of banana is a good source of nutrients, helps in digestion, and gives you energy without the help of cholesterols and fats. It’s also usually used as a treatment for acid reflux.

3. Avocado

Avocados have a pH level of an estimated pH level of 6.3 to 6.6. It contains rich amounts of healthy monosaturated fats and helps the body absorb more nutrients. Avocado is a good source of vitamins, K, C, E, and fiber. It also contains other vital nutrients that the body needs to function properly such as pantothenic acid, niacin magnesium, niacin, riboflavin, and folate acid. It also contains higher amounts of potassium compared to bananas which reduce risks of heart attacks, high blood pressure (hypertension), kidney disease, and stroke.

4. Coconuts

Coconut is a one-seeded and high-fiber drupe and can be classified either as a fruit, a nut, or a seed. Coconut is one of the less acidic fruit, in general, with a pH level of 5.5 to 7.8. While its product, coconut milk, has a pH level of 6.1 to 7.0. The coconut by itself is already alkaline. However, it becomes acidic if heated and converted into coconut oil.

Coconut flesh is rich in antioxidants and is considered a superfood. Several studies also suggest that its fatty acid compound can increase brain function.

5. Watermelon

A watermelon is 92% water and also one of the most alkaline among other fruits with an estimated pH level of 9.0. It’s a good source of beta-carotene and antioxidants such as lycopene and vitamin c. Aside from helping you hydrate during hot summers, it can also help you lose weight. Studies have shown that watermelon has the ability to help you reduce your cravings. This is because it’s mainly made of water and fiber-rich, thus, it can help you reduce and maintain a healthy weight.

6. Mangoes

Mangoes are a tropical fruit that can be found in most countries with a humid temperature that includes Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and some region in South America. Unripe mango is proven to be acidic, with 3.40 to 4.80 pH levels. On the other hand, the ripe mango is less acidic, with a pH level of 5.80 to 6.00.

It contains a high amount of pectin, fiber, and vitamin C that helps in regulating cholesterol levels. It also aids skin cleansing and gives you healthy and glowing skin.

7. Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe or spanspek belongs to a species of melon called the Cucurbitaceae family which includes watermelon and honeydew. It has a pH level that ranges from 6.13 to 6.58. Cantaloupe is particularly beneficial for the hair because it’s abundant in vitamin A. This nutrient is vital in the production of sebum which maintains hair moisture.
